Templeton ja olematon ID-tutkimus
Templeton Foundation tarjosi jokin aika sitten rahaa tutkimukseen jossa käsitellään elämän syntyä ja biologisen monimutkaisuuden muuttumista:
The John Templeton Foundation has made up to $3 million available for research grants to stimulate and sponsor new research insights directly pertinent to the 'great debate' over purpose in the context of the emergence of increasing biological complexity, ranging from the biochemical level to the evolution of life and the emergence of society and culture. This programme seeks to enrich and deepen the rigour, quality, and scientific and philosophical basis for this debate. The focus is primarily on innovative scientific and systematic research, but projects with strong philosophical or theological components are also encouraged. Grant proposals from all sides of this 'debate' are welcomed.
Hieman yllättäen he eivät saaneet yhtäkään ehdotusta IDeisteiltä. Ei mitään tekstiä siitä miten ID-tutkimuksella voitaisiin käsitellä tätä asiaa. Tämä taisi olla herätys Templetonin väelle. Sittemmin heidän edustajansa on kertonut mm. seuraavaa:
"We do not believe that the science underpinning the intelligent-design movement is sound, we do not support research or programs that deny large areas of well-documented scientific knowledge, and the foundation is a nonpolitical entity and does not engage in or support political movements."
Ja:
"In the past we have given grants to scientists who have gone on to identify themselves as members of the intelligent-design community. We understand that this could be misconstrued by some to suggest that we implicitly support the movement, but this was not our intention at the time, nor is it today."
Templeton Foundation ottaa etäisyyttä IDeismiin. Se on antanut tukea IDeisteille aikaisemmin, mutta ei enää. Tai ehkä tuki palaa heti kun joku osaa selittää miten Älykkäällä suunnittelulla voi tehdä tiedettä?
IDeistien selitys tapahtumille. Syynä on taas median asenne. Templeton on kuulemma kyllä tukenut ID:tä, joten kannan muutos ei haittaa. Tai IDeistejä ei erikseen pyydetty tuottamaan tieteellisen tutkimuksen ehdotuksia alussa mainittuun tarjoukseen. Mutta ID:llä kyllä on tieteellistä tutkimusta. On.

Eivätkö? Linkin mukaan mm. Discovery-instituutissa vaikuttava Henry Schaefer ei ollut vain ehdottanut tutkimusta, vaan hän myös sai yllä mainitussa tutkimusrahan jaossa rahoitustakin ehdottamaansa tutkimukseen...

Hienoa! Nyt vain pitää ottaa selvää miten siinä käytettiin ID-tutkimusta.
Voidaan vakavasti kysyä että voiko ID:llä vielä olla aitoa ID -tutkimusta.
Koska jos tilanne on siten, kuin Wells myönsi, eli:
"I don’t think I’m obligated to propose an alternate theory" ... "I don’t pretend to have an alternate theory that explains the history of life."

Ja voinemme sanoa että ilman teoriaa on aika vaikea johtaa taustateoriasta deduktiivisesti ennusteita, eli kuten Paul Nelson on maininnut:
"Easily the biggest challenge facing the ID community is to develop a full-fledged theory of biological design. We don’t have such a theory now, and that’s a real problem. Without a theory, it’s very hard to know where to direct your research focus. Right now, we’ve got a bag of powerful intuitions, and a handful of notions such as “irreducible complexity” and “specified complexity” –- but, as yet, no general theory of biological design."
