Every single time an individual parasite replicates, be it asexual or sexual, its genome is copied from mother to daughter. Each and every time the genome is copied to a daughter cell there is an opportunity for random mutation to introduce changes. These changes are heritable. Each replication is a new generation. Ergo there have been billions of trillions of generations in the last several decades.
